Slow Living in City Life #Food

If you have read my last blog, you know our present topic of discussion. And if you are new here, first of all welcome to my blog. In my last blog, I was writing about how we could incorporate Slow Living in the City Life.

To continue the topic further, let us explore another important aspect of our daily lifestyle- Food. Now we all know, fast pace in the City Life often left us with little time to cook food or indulge in good quality food. We are more allured with fast food (food that is ready made, processed and easily available.) Food industries are flooded with such food. In every corner of our city, we see ready to make and grab and go food in large quantities. And like “busyness”, “fast food” or other ready to eat foods are the latest trends in our life. They are easily available to satisfy your hunger pangs. But often these processed food or fast food lost nutrients in its making. And if our food lacks nutrients, what is the use of eating them.

You may feel the same too. But then you require alternatives to swap for better. But what are those nutrient dense foods we could look forward to? Well, we not only look for nutritional labels in our food, but also for taste. Easy availability is also a big criterion. So what are the foods you should swap and how can slow living can get associated with it?

Slow Living teaches us to appreciates our food culture in our community. In every culture, we develop a food culture and traditions based on local produces. But with the gradual spread of fast paced life, these ancient traditions are fast disappearing. Slow Living tries to reconnect with these food culture and traditions.

In fact in 1989 the international Slow Food movement was officially founded in Paris, France and the Slow Food manifesto was signed.  The main aim of this Slow Food movement, is the lasting change in the food system and market forces to equity, sustainability and pleasure in the food that we eat.

Now let us dive in to see how we too could incorporate the very essence of this Slow Food Movement into our daily lifestyle and make our world a little better.

1. Avoid fast food or processed food– With Lockdown in most part of the world, fast food shops and restaurants are almost closed or open in minimum number. Stop going to this places. Instead go for shops and restaurants which serves local foods and recipes. These could be a good change in the beginning. Children are also more prone to eat this fast foods. Take them along with you and introduce them with your local food and cultures.

2. Make food at home – We all are very busy now a days and we don’t find time to cook. But take some time out and dish out  a recipe from your oven. There are hundreds of recipes that you could prepare easily at home. The food that you cook are filled with all the essentials nutrients and are preservatives free. They are good for your body and healthy for our guts.

3. Use Local groceries–  Buy fresh fruits and vegetables from your local groceries rather than big shopping malls. Most of the fruits and vegetables seen in big shopping malls are un fresh and laden with preservatives. On the other hands, local groceries, keep vegetables and fruits that are locally produce and hence fresh and good for our health. Additionally, you could also promote this local groceries for selling the local produce. Farmers of your locality will also be greatly helped by it.

4. Try grandmother’s recipe– I am very sure that we all have some of the recipes in our mind passed down from generations by our ancestors. We all have memories of some of them prepared by our grandmothers or mothers in our childhood. Recollect them and try to prepare them at home. These recipes are unique and represent the local culture and heritage from where we belong. And it is our duty to pass them to our children. Make these recipes for your children and let them enjoy too.
